Dr. Rick deShazo

Host - Dr. Rick deShazo

Dr. Richard D. deShazo is a Billy S. Guyton Distinguished Professor, professor of medicine and pediatrics and chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He also serves as managing partner of University Internal Medicine Associates, the private practice plan of internal medicine specialists at UMC.

Dr. deShazo, a graduate of Birmingham-Southern College in Birmingham, Alabama, received the MD at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He completed an internship in pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of UAB, residency in internal medicine and fellowship in adult and pediatric allergy/immunology at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center and a research fellowship at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Washington, D.C.. He is board certified in internal medicine, allergy-immunology, rheumatology and geriatrics. Before coming to Mississippi, he served on the faculties of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Services, the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Tulane University and was chair of medicine at the University of South Alabama.

Dr. deShazo has served on the American Board of Allergy and Immunology, the American Board of Internal Medicine, the American Board of Medical Specialists and on the board of the Association of Professors of Medicine. He is past president of the Association of Professors of Medicine and the Southern Society for Clinical Investigation. He has served on the Council of Academic Specialists of the Association of American Medical Colleges for more than 10 years. He is the author or co-author of more than 200 scientific publications in the areas of allergy and immunology and serves on the editorial boards of three scientific journals.

Dr. deShazo received a Special Service Award for the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology in 1993 for his work as editor of the Primer of Allergy and Immunology and a second Special Service Medal for contributions to the specialty in 2006. Other awards include the U.S. Army Meritorious Service Award, the Hoff Medal of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, the Mayor’s Award for Special Service from the City of New Orleans, the Bernard Berman Lectureship for the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, the Dr. Robert D. and Alma W. Moreton Original Research Award of the Southern Medical Association and the Founders’ Medal of the Southern Society for Clinical Investigation. He was elected a Distinguished Alumnus of Birmingham-Southern College in 2003 and has been consistently listed in Best Doctors in America.

Dr. deShazo has been active in a number of community, civic and religious groups working toward racial reconciliation and has served as an elder in the Presbyterian Church and a steward in the Methodist Church. He and his wife, Gloria, have three children and two grandchildren. The deShazos enjoy signing in the their church choir, gardening, boating and spending time with friends and family.

Host - Gene Edwards

Gene Edwards joined Mississippi Public Broadcasting following a long career in broadcasting --- radio, television, documentaries, promotions, management, special events and journalism. Edwards is deputy director of Content Operations and is responsible for guiding the content and development of television, radio, education services and news and public affairs programming. It is his job to unify these areas of Mississippi Public Broadcasting by combining their strengths to present programs that are reflective, thought provoking and of interest to Mississippians.

Edwards is a veteran broadcast journalist who was chief anchor at WAPT, the local ABC affiliate, before moving to public broadcasting in 2003. He hosts the acclaimed “Writers” and “Conversations” series on MPB television. He holds three Emmy Awards for hosting and directing “Writers” and another for on-camera talent achievement. He attended Indiana State University and has held positions as a radio and television personality, programmer and station manager in Wichita, Kansas, and in Minneapolis, Minn., before moving to Mississippi.
