The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine provides clinical care and consultative services at the University Hospital, the Jackson Medical Mall, the G.V. ("Sonny") Montgomery Department of Veterans’ Affairs Medical Center, and the University Medical Pavilion.
Doug Campbell, MD, serves as division director. Joining the division this year is Akinyinka Ajelabi, MD, who serves as director of the MICU at the G.V. ("Sonny") Montgomery Department of Veterans’ Affairs Medical Center.
Under the direction of Marcy Petrini, PhD, the pulmonary function laboratory’s turn-around time for results from pulmonary function tests has significantly decreased. Michael Baumann, MD, is back on campus after spending a year at Dartmouth College’s School of Medicine, where he earned a Master’s degree in Clinical Evaulative Studies. Baumann chairs the American College of Chest Physicians’ Health and Sciences Policy Committee. He is vice chair of the Chest 2005 international meeting and will chair its 2006 meeting.
The division is working closely with the Medical Center’s Department of Psychiatry to expand the Medical Center’s Sleep Center. Three faculty members, Drs. Alp Baran, Michael Rack, and Allen Richert, have joint appointments in both the division and the Department of Psychiatry.
With a total of six fellows, the division has an active research and training program. All fellows have presented posters, cases, or case discussions at national and regional professional conferences.
Several members of the division are active with the Jackson Heart Study, including Ajelabi, Campbell, Petrini, and Rajesh Baghat, MD. Through his work with clinical trials, Thomas Payne, PhD, received more than $1 million in external grants this past year. Karen Crews, DMD, continues to direct the Medical Center’s tobacco cessation program, with more than $10 million in funding. She also serves as a co-investigator for the Medical Center’s National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health, where she directs its Leadership Core
