Description
The Jackson Heart Study is a study that is examining the factors that influence the development of cardiovascular disease in African-American men and women. In addition, the Jackson Heart Study is an effort to empower African-Americans in the Jackson Metropolitan Area to participate in the study as well as provide meaningful input into how the study is developed and carried out.

In many ways, the Jackson Heart Study is a continuation of the successful work of the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study, a study in four U.S. cities including Jackson that began more than 10 years ago. Building on the accomplishments of ARIC, the goal of the Jackson Heart Study is to identify factors that cause African-Americans to be at a high risk for the development of cardiovascular disease. Results from this study will provide valuable recommendations for the prevention as well as treatment of cardiovascular disease in African-Americans.
