The Division of Geriatric Medicine, headed by Mark Meeks, MD, provides both primary and consultative care at University Hospital, the Mississippi Methodist Rehabilitation Center, the Jackson Medical Mall, and the University Medical Pavilion. Thomas Mosley, PhD, serves as the division’s associate director.
Faculty members evaluate and manage a variety of geriatric syndromes including dementia, falls, urinary incontinece, osteoporosis, and pharmacologic issues among the elderly. Mosley provides evaluations for dementia through the Geriatric Memory Assessment Clinic.
The division also provides care for residents in two long-term care facilities, and Meeks serves as medical director at one of the facilities.
The division has an active research portfolio, with more than $10 million in NIH funding. Mosley serves as principal investigator for several studies, including the Jackson site of the "Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study," the "ARIC MRI and Neurocognitive Longitudinal Study," and "Genetics of Microangiopathic Brain Injury. "
Mosley was awarded $500,000 from NIH as part of a genotyping and cell-preservation initiative. The longitudinal assessment of brain phenotypes measured in Mosley’s ARIC MRI study, as well as the extensive risk factor data available on study participants, will yield unique information on the influence of genes and gene-environment interaction on the development, progression, and clinical sequelea of common brain changes with age.
Kathy Gregg, MD, serves as a co-investigator for the Medical Center’s National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health and as a co-director of the Center’s Outreach Core.
Ken Butler, PhD, joined the Division of Geriatrics in March as an instructor. Butler will serve as the publication coordinator for the ARIC study
