The Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology continues to grow, expanding its clinical and research programs during each of the past six years.

The newest addition to the division is its director, Gailen Marshall, MD, PhD, who also serves as the department’s Vice Chair for Faculty Development. Before coming to the Medical Center, Marshall was the director of the Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston.

Division clinical operations are located within walking distance of the main campus. Division staff are dedicated to meeting the special needs of patients with allergic and immunologic disorders. Jeanette Arnold serves as the division’s nurse practitioner and is pursuing certification as an asthma educator.

The division offers same-day clinic service for acute referrals and specialized diagnostic testing, including allergy testing, drug and other allergen challenges, fiberoptic rhinoscopy, patch testing for contact dermatitis, and pulmonary function testing. Immunotherapyis provided daily. Physicians in the division see both adult and pediatric patients, and all have joint faculty appointments in the Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics.

A teaching clinic is available weekly at the Jackson Medical Mall, where an immunodeficiency clinic is also planned. In addition, the division sponsors an annual asthma screening community program. Stephen Kemp, MD, serves as a medical codirector of Adult Asthma Pharmacy Services in the Jackson Medical Mall’s Pharmaceutical Care Clinic.

Kemp is director of the allergy and immunology fellowship training program, and Rubina Inamdar, MD, serves as its associate director. The fellowship training program is open to graduates of pediatric and internal medicine programs. Michael Rupp, MD, who completed a combined residency program in medicine and pediatrics at the University of Texas Medical School, Houston, is the division’s first fellow-in-training.

During this past year, Richard deShazo, MD, was named a Billy S. Guyton Distinguished Professor, a Medical Center professorship designed to honor those who have made major contributions to the institution and to research in their discipline.

Clinical research interests include pathogenesis of chronic rhinosinusitis, fungal sinusitis, and imported fire ant hypersensitivity. Faculty members have authored more than 40 publications in the field of allergy and immunology over the past six years.

During the past year, peer-reviewed publications of faculty members have appeared in Annals of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology; the Up-To-Date Internet medical database and in American Journal of Medicine; Chest; International Journal of Toxicology; and the Southern Medical Journal.
